Perfect Vella Pola-A Ramadan Favorite

Vella Pola is a cherished Ramadan staple in many Malabar households. Soft, spongy, and incredibly light, this steamed rice cake is perfect for Suhoor, providing a comforting meal that’s easy on the stomach yet keeps you satisfied.

Vella Pola

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup pachari (Raw Rice)
  • 1 tbsp urad daal white lentil
  • ¾ cup cooked rice
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp instant yeast
  • ½ tsp salt
  • A little less than ¾ cup water/coconut water

Instructions
 

  • Soak pachari and urad daal in water for about 2-3 hours
  • Add drained rice, urad, cooked rice, sugar, and instant yeast in a blender jar. Pour water/ coconut water and grind until smooth without grains.
  • Transfer to a bowl and let it rise for about 3-4 hours.
  • Add salt and mix. Let it rise for another half an hour.
  • Butter idli mould and pour pola batter into it.
  • Steam cook for 15 minutes and its ready.
  • Serve it with coconut milk and sugar.
